The Pickup
Men

I started this painting five years ago. I had just won my first Best of Show and I did what many artists do after their first big success. I choked. I was so afraid to put paint on paper that I layered near transparent glazes for weeks, looked at the painting for months, and eventually put it in the closet where it lived for five years. I had completed 17 paintings in the past few months and it was finally time to face my fears. Oh yeah. And a photograph of this painting had to be in the mail today if I was going to hit my art show deadline.
There was absolutely no time to waste on second guessing myself. I painted nonstop for over eight hours, free-handed the background in the shape of a bronc rider at five minutes to 3:00, and by 3:27 my art show entry photos were ready to be picked up at the Walgreens around the corner. What happened next is a story all of its own.
