This painting was my first Best of Show. We had been shoeing horses all day. I was helping a farrier from Texas shoe 140 head of horses at a dude ranch in the Sierras before they opened for the season and we were almost done. I had left everyone else was up at the mess hall — they were shooting the breeze after dinner — to take some photos of the horses. This mustang was one of the few left in the pen, waiting to be shod the next day.
I painted it and entered it in Art at the Classic at the Draft Horse Fair in Grass Valley, California. The night the show opened, I was at a bible study when I received a call from a friend congratulating me. She had happened to be at the fair and saw my painting. It won Best of Show!
