While leaving the SkyRose Ranch in San Miguel after interviewing the ranch manager I came across this flock of sheep. I pulled over and snapped a few photos with my phone through the car window before continuing on my way. While considering what else to paint for the Western Spirit Art Show’s miniature show, I thought of this picture.
I began work on both miniatures, this one and Gateway to the Cuyama, at the same time, putting the first layers of paint on paper while camping at Pismo Beach. While finishing the painting back home, I realized it needed something else — like the San Miguel Mission’s famous bell tower. Putting the bell tower in really brought the painting together.
